ANGLE OF ATTACK: Seeing as the show leaves Maeve’s abortion as an open ended plot line, I chose to write my spec episode within the early days of Sex Education to tie up the loose ends. However, this particular topic allows me the opportunity to speak on the severe lack of education regarding women’s health, which is a topic I hold dear to me. I, as well as many women in my life, have gone extended periods of time, enduring female health complications because the health care system and the education system has failed to teach women enough about their bodies. When I was Maeve’s age, I had hormonal health complications that severely affected my mental wellbeing. I didn’t realize until about a year later, that these complications related to my female anatomy. However, once I realized, I was handed a pack of birth control, and sent on my way. No one took the time to educate me on my body’s functions, and for years, I suffered the consequences. In this episode, I use Maeve’s abortion as a means of calling out our education system for such a poor attempt at educating females on their bodies.
